Jackie’s husband came home one night and struck her repeatedly with a dull ax, partially paralyzing her. The Legal Clinic obtained a Protection From Abuse order against the husband and worked with the police to ensure he was arrested for his crimes. The Legal Clinic worked with Jackie’s medical providers to ensure that Jackie received rehabilitation therapy and other treatment to give her a chance for an independent and fulfilling life.
Top Joe, a 17-year-old boy, is emotionally disturbed due to a history of being sexually abused. Despite Joe’s disability and in violation of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), his school district placed him in a disciplinary school. The Legal Clinic compelled the school district to transfer Joe into an approved private school where he now receives both academic instruction and therapy for his disability. Top William, who is hard of hearing, lived in an apartment with faulty wiring. An electrical fire damaged William’s apartment, and he had to move to a Red Cross shelter. His landlord refused to return $975 in escrowed rent and security deposit. The Legal Clinic sued the landlord on William’s behalf and made sure that William had a sign language interpreter at the hearing. The court awarded William double damages. When the landlord still refused to pay, the Legal Clinic garnished his bank account and obtained $1950 for William, plus interest. Top Susan, who has cancer, wanted to prepare legal documents to ensure that her affairs were in order and that her minor daughter would have a guardian after Susan passed away. Susan’s illness made her unable to come to the Legal Clinic’s offices. The Legal Clinic visited Susan several times in her home. They helped her prepare and execute a will, a living will, a power of attorney allowing Susan’s mother to handle Susan’s medical and financial affairs, and a standby guardianship that would make Susan’s mother the guardian of Susan’s daughter if Susan passed away.
