Each year, the Legal Clinic for the Disabled (LCD) helps many hundreds of people with disabilities through one of our five key programs:
General Legal Assistance: LCD staff attorneys handle about 90 requests for assistance per month. Staff attorneys collect information, via telephone or in-person, concerning the client’s problem. Occasionally, the staff attorney can advise the client and address the issue on the telephone. In all other cases, LCD might open a case as an in-house matter or find a volunteer to handle the case. Volunteer attorneys handle many of our cases. Top Anti-Violence Initiative: LCD’s staff attorneys address the needs of disabled victims of domestic violence and abuse, which is a problem of great significance to people with disabilities. The Anti-Violence Initiative is funded by the Altria Foundation. Top Legal Services for the Deaf: People who are deaf or hard of hearing are often denied the service of lawyers due to the expense of hiring sign language interpreters. Through partnerships and outreach to the deaf community, LCD is seeking ways to increase this population’s access to justice. The Legal Services for the Deaf project is funded by the Fourjay Foundation. Top Community Outreach and Education: LCD attorneys provide educational programs to consumers with disabilities and to its community partners on a variety of topics, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, public and private benefits available to people with disabilities, Social Security, attendant care services, and domestic violence. In addition, LCD co-sponsors CLE classes and volunteer training sessions. Top Children’s Health Initiative: This program, which is funded by the Independence Foundation, provides free legal representation and advice to low-income families of children with disabilities on health care coverage issues, such as denials and reductions in Medical Assistance coverage, and other legal issues that may impact a child’s health and well-being. Top Law & Health Initiative for Cancer Survivors: This program, which is funded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, provides free legal representation and advice to low-income cancer survivors and outreach to medical providers and caregivers, on legal issues affecting the health, safety, families and well-being of cancer survivors, including health care coverage, public and private disability benefits, family law, powers of attorney, wills, living wills, housing and employment. Top LCD helps people solve a wide range of legal problems:
